Biography

Dr. Satish Mehta, Ph.D., is a senior Scientist working in the Biomedical Research and Environmental Sciences of Johnson Space Center, NASA, USA in the department of immunology and virology for the last 31 years.  He is involved in both operational and research activities to ensure the health, safety, and optimum performance of astronauts. He has been studying the effect of short and long space travels associated stresses on the reactivation and shedding of human herpes viruses and that, in turn can be an early predictor of changes in immunity. His research findings have been extended in the terrestrial settings to help early diagnose and treat shingles (zoster) and chickenpox and diagnose viral ophthalmic diseases. He has published more than 70 peer-reviewed publications, and over 250 scientific presentations at national and international scientific meetings, 4 NASA tech-briefs, one patent pending and many NASA funded grants.
