Biography

Leena Ali Ibrahim completed her B.Sc. in Biomedical Science at Delhi University and M.Sc. degree in Life Sciences at Jawaharlal Nehru University, before moving to the U.S. to pursue her Ph.D. in Neuroscience at the University Of Southern California (USC). At USC, she worked in the lab of Dr. Huizhong Tao on several molecular, electrophysiological, and imaging projects, developing Cre-dependent reporter mouse lines for tracing single-neuron projections and using patch-clamping and 2-photon imaging to study how cross-modal inputs influence visual cortical processing. Leena then moved to Dr. Gord Fishell's lab at Harvard Medical School (HMS) for Postdoctoral research, where she mainly worked on layer 1 interneuron connectivity in the sensory cortex. She started her independent lab at KAUST (King Abdullah University of Science and Technology) in Saudi Arabia in Aug 2021 to continue her research into the complexity of cortical sensory processing and how these systems are perturbed in neuropsychiatric and developmental disorders.

Developmental dynamics of bottom-up and top-down input integration onto L1 interneurons in the sensory cortex

I will discuss our recent study that investigated the contribution of early thalamic inputs onto L1 interneurons for the establishment of top-down connectivity in the primary visual cortex. We found that bottom-up thalamic inputs predominate during L1 development and preferentially target neurogliaform cells.
